Four mainline chapters (2014–2023), one theatrical spin-off (Ballerina, 2025), and one TV series (The Continental, 2023). A fifth mainline chapter has been officially confirmed by Lionsgate with Keanu Reeves and director Chad Stahelski attached — details in the Chapter 5 file — but no release date has been set, so five is the number until further notice.

Note the runtime creep: the franchise nearly doubled in length between the first film and Chapter 4, which at 169 minutes is the longest entry by almost forty minutes. Two things make this timeline unusual. First, The Continental is a distant prequel: a three-part series set in 1970s New York showing how a young Winston Scott took the hotel from its previous manager, Cormac (Mel Gibson). Second, Ballerina is an “interquel.” It takes place between Chapters 3 and 4, while John is excommunicado with a global bounty on his head — which is exactly how Keanu Reeves can appear in it without breaking the story of Chapter 4. Eve Macarro's revenge mission runs parallel to John's war, crossing it briefly and violently.

The franchise is a critical anomaly: each mainline sequel scored as well as or better than the film before it, peaking with Chapter 4 — rare air for any action series. Ballerina sits lower with critics but, notably, holds the highest audience score in the franchise at 92%. Fans and critics agree on the chapters; they split on the spin-off.

Fan rankings tend to differ in one spot: many put the 2014 original first for its economy and emotional weight. There is no wrong answer, only different amounts of dog.
